Estonia Steps Up Naval Patrols to Protect Baltic Sea Infrastructure

Estonia is bolstering its naval presence in the Gulf of Finland, determined to protect the Baltic Sea's critical infrastructure against potential threats. The move is part of a wider security effort triggered by disruptions following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, including power and gas pipeline outages.

As NATO increases its regional presence, Estonia has deployed three vessels near crucial undersea cables. These measures aim to prevent future incidents similar to past outages, some attributed to civilian mishaps while others remain under investigation.

The Estonian navy's Sakala mine hunter recently patrolled the busy shipping lane, inspecting a Cypriot-flagged vessel with a suspicious Russian name. Deputy Commander Johan-Elias Seljamaa emphasized readiness to intervene against any threat, even in international waters.
