Cyclone Zelia Pummels Australia’s Iron Ore Hub

Tropical Cyclone Zelia, a category five storm, made its destructive presence felt on Australia's west coast, unleashing heavy rains and winds up to 290 kph. The cyclone hit east of Port Hedland, the world's largest iron ore hub, around midday, primarily sparing the town itself from its fiercest winds.

According to Matthew Collopy from Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, Cyclone Zelia is the most severe storm to batter the Pilbara coast since Cyclone Ilsa in April. Expected to bring record-breaking rainfalls of up to 300 mm in 24 hours, precautionary shutdowns were enacted for major ports such as Port Hedland, Dampier, and Cape Lambert.

Amid fears of significant market disruption, mining giants like BHP, Fortescue, and Rio Tinto suspended operations in the area. The cyclone's impact prompted a rise in iron ore futures, fueled by concerns over the halted supplies. Meanwhile, local residents, many of whom are employed by the mining sector, have been advised to shelter in safe locations.
