A regulation concerning the collection of donations during the holy month of Ramzan has sparked controversy in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah clarified on Friday that the decision was reached after consultations with local religious leaders and emphasized that it should not be politicized.

The deputy commissioner of Kishtwar, citing concerns over unauthorized fundraising, issued the order on Wednesday. Congress MLAs Gulam Ahmed Mir and Nizam-ud-Din Bhat raised concerns in the Assembly, prompting Abdullah to review the situation. He found that the decision was not arbitrary and had community backing.

Religious leaders in Kishtwar voiced worries about individuals creating fake NGOs to collect donations under false pretenses, which led to the directive. The order aims to protect genuine charities from losing necessary support. Despite political pushback, the move was welcomed by clerics, including the Imam of the Jamia Masjid Kishtwar.
