The Finance Ministry engaged with a Select Committee of Lok Sabha on Monday to discuss the current overhaul of the country's Income Tax Bill. This initiative is led by BJP MP Baijayant 'Jay' Panda. During the meeting, the proposal to simplify and modernize the decades-old legislation was a focal point.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had previously highlighted the importance of the bill restructuring, emphasizing a 'trust first, scrutinize later' approach that aligns with the concept of 'Nyaya' (justice). The bill proposes replacing terms like 'assessment year' with 'tax year' to facilitate better understanding among taxpayers.
The committee has diverse representation, including members from both the ruling BJP and opposition parties like Congress and TMC. The team is expected to present their findings and recommendations by the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament, following the conclusion of the Budget session on April 4.
