E-Shram Empowerment: Revolutionizing Access for India's Unorganized Workforce

Over 30.68 crore unorganized workers have registered on the e-Shram portal, launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The platform offers workers access to social security schemes and integration with various governmental programs, now enhanced with multilingual support and a dedicated mobile application for improved accessibility and inclusivity.

As of March 3, more than 30.68 crore unorganized workers have registered on the e-Shram portal, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Notably, over half of the registrants, 53.68%, are female. The e-Shram portal, launched on August 26, 2021, aims to create a comprehensive national database of unorganized workers, integrated with Aadhaar data.

Designed as a 'One-Stop Solution' for unorganized workers, the portal provides a Universal Account Number (UAN) to each registrant on a self-declaration basis. The initiative aligns with budgetary announcements to facilitate access to various social security schemes. On October 21, 2024, the ministry reaffirmed this vision through the development of e-Shram.

Thirteen central government schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi) and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), are currently mapped with the e-Shram portal. Further enhancing accessibility, the ministry introduced multilingual support on January 7, 2025, in 22 Indian languages via the Bhashini platform. A dedicated mobile application launched on February 24, 2025, now offers unorganized workers real-time access to these welfare schemes.
