Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, transformative conservation efforts were launched in Gujarat's Greater Gir region during his tenure as Chief Minister. These initiatives, marked by the introduction of strict laws, policies, and schemes, are now being diligently implemented by current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, solidifying Gujarat's reputation as a wildlife sanctuary over the last fifteen years.

Continuing this legacy, the government is driving public awareness and conservation, integrating cutting-edge technology to protect wildlife. A pivotal development in this effort was the establishment of a state-of-the-art monitoring unit in Gir in 2019, which has enhanced scientific research and monitoring practices crucial for effective wildlife conservation.

This advanced monitoring unit employs radio telemetry studies for carnivores and birds, supports wireless communications, and manages critical data on safari vehicle movements and entry-exit points in the region. Such technology-driven studies provide significant insights into animal behaviors and movements, pivotal for informed conservation actions.

Additionally, a sophisticated speed monitoring system has been deployed to reduce animal-vehicle collisions, utilizing sensor-based thermal cameras. This system measures vehicle speeds and displays them on LED screens to alert drivers, ensuring both road safety and wildlife protection. The incorporation of ANPR technology allows for efficient tracking, adding a layer of surveillance over license plate recognition.

The thermal cameras are adept at capturing the heat signatures of both animals and objects, facilitating accurate monitoring even during poor visibility and adverse weather conditions. This data, crucial for preventing incidents, is instantly communicated to control centers and forest checkposts, enabling fast response actions to prevent wildlife accidents.
