India and Madagascar: Strengthening Ties Through Democracy and Cooperation

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted India's valued relationship with Madagascar on Wednesday, marking it as a key partner in regional growth and security. This aligns with India's SAGAR vision for the Indian Ocean. The bilateral relationship plays a vital role in ensuring stability and fostering economic prosperity, the Lok Sabha Secretariat reported.
Birla's comments arose during a meeting with a delegation led by Madagascar's National Assembly President, H E Justin Tokely, at Parliament House. He stressed the historically robust ties, grounded in trade, culture, and interaction, and reiterated India's tradition of aiding neighboring nations, particularly during disasters.
India's humanitarian efforts in Madagascar were commended, including disaster relief and socioeconomic projects. The contributions of the Indian diaspora in Madagascar were also acknowledged by Birla, who celebrated the inaugural 'Jaipur Foot Camp' aimed at aiding differently-abled individuals.
Emphasizing India's democratic heritage, Birla underscored the nation's legacy as the 'Mother of Democracy', with high electoral participation symbolizing democratic engagement. He shared insights on India's parliamentary operations and highlighted PRIDE's capacity-building initiatives, expressing a desire to extend cooperation to Madagascar's legislature.
He further advocated for regular parliamentary exchanges to enrich legislative practices. Tokely expressed appreciation for India's economic and technological advancements, highlighting shared interests in various sectors and hoping for strengthened bilateral cooperation.
The delegation, which engaged in the Lok Sabha proceedings, received warm hospitality and acknowledgement of shared goals. This visit solidified the commitment to collaborative efforts between the two nations.
