Karnataka MLA G. Janardhan Reddy Disqualified Post-Conviction: Legislative Seat Vacant

Karnataka's Gangawati MLA G. Janardhan Reddy was disqualified from the State Assembly after being convicted by the Principal Special Judge for CBI Cases in Hyderabad. The disqualification, effective from May 6, 2025, will last six years post-release unless overturned. A legislative seat is now vacant.

Karnataka's Gangawati constituency MLA, G. Janardhan Reddy, has been disqualified from the State Legislative Assembly following his conviction by the Principal Special Judge for CBI Cases in Hyderabad. His disqualification took effect from May 6, 2025, as per the Karnataka Assembly notification.

The disqualification was implemented according to Article 191(1)(e) of the Indian Constitution and Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The Assembly's notification stated Reddy will remain disqualified for an additional six years following his release, unless a competent court overturns the conviction, resulting in a vacant legislative seat.

The notification specified Reddy's disqualification stemmed from his conviction in CC.No.1 of 2012, with the disqualification term to continue unless judicially challenged. Reddy formed the 'Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha' in 2022 and elected to the Gangawati seat in the 2023 assembly elections. Previously, he was a minister in the Yediyurappa-led government but distanced himself from BJP post-bail in the mining scam case.
