Peanut Paradigm: UP Ushers in a Groundnut Revolution

The Uttar Pradesh government is boosting peanut cultivation, especially in Bundelkhand, with production more than doubling to 4.7% of India’s total. Supported by the UP AGREES project and World Bank, a cluster model in Jhansi aims to elevate exports and ensure better returns for farmers via improved pricing.

The Uttar Pradesh government is launching a major initiative to enhance peanut cultivation, with a notable focus on the Bundelkhand region. Official reports reveal a production surge, now accounting for 4.7% of India's total, a significant leap from 2% between 2013 and 2016.

The development strategy, under the UP AGREES project, is supported by the World Bank and targets the establishment of Jhansi as a dedicated peanut cluster alongside six other Bundelkhand districts. This model is projected to strengthen exports and provide better financial returns to farmers through improved pricing structures.

While Gujarat maintains a dominant 47% share in national peanut production, Uttar Pradesh's focused efforts aim to close existing yield gaps highlighted in past production data. Additionally, state procurement at a set Minimum Support Price aims to assure fair earnings, aided by organizations like NAFED and NCCF.
