The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has intervened following alarming reports of a woman's public assault over her husband's unsettled debt in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. The woman faced the ordeal of being tied to a tree and beaten by a moneylender, a scene witnessed by the villagers on June 16.
According to coverage dated June 17, the woman's husband had originally borrowed Rs 80,000 from the moneylender nearly three years ago. Over time, he supposedly accrued further debts locally. With repayment long overdue, he allegedly abandoned his family, leaving his wife and three children under financial strain.
Working hard as a daily laborer, the woman patiently paid off the debts in parts, yet this effort was met with violence from the moneylender. The NHRC condemned this grave breach of human rights, demanding actionable reports from the Chief Secretary and the Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police within two weeks, highlighting a failure in protecting vulnerable citizens from such unlawful actions.
