India's Continued Oil Engagement with Russia Amid U.S. Pressure
India remains committed to purchasing Russian oil despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of penalties and increased tariffs. Indian officials justify the decision, citing long-term contracts and a strategy to keep global oil prices stable. Russian oil remains unsanctioned, differentiating it from Iranian and Venezuelan imports.
Despite mounting pressure from the U.S., India continues to buy oil from Russia, according to government sources who spoke with Reuters. This move comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump threatening penalties on India's oil imports and increasing tariffs on Indian exports.
Indian officials have asserted that long-term contracts make it challenging to halt Russian oil purchases abruptly. This strategy, they argue, has helped prevent a drastic rise in global oil prices. Indian authorities highlight that Russian crude isn't under direct sanctions, unlike Iranian and Venezuelan oil.
While Trump expressed irritation over India's buying patterns, Indian sources indicate no policy change is forthcoming. Still, Indian state refiners have paused purchasing due to narrowing discounts. Significant players like Indian Oil Corp and Hindustan Petroleum Corp are currently not pursuing new Russian oil deals.
