Boosting Connectivity: Marakkanam-Puducherry Highway Gets Green Light

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a 4-lane highway project from Marakkanam to Puducherry in Tamil Nadu. With a budget of Rs 2,157 crore, the project aims to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and enhance regional connectivity, facilitating economic growth and generating significant employment opportunities.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by the Prime Minister, has sanctioned a crucial infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in Tamil Nadu. The decision greenlights the construction of a 46 km, four-lane highway from Marakkanam to Puducherry, operating under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), with an estimated budget of Rs 2,157 crore.

The existing route, a two-lane highway (NH-332A) along with state highways, often faces heavy traffic issues, particularly in busy urban areas and essential towns. The upgrade to a four-lane highway is expected to ease congestion, heighten safety, and address the transportation needs of rapidly expanding cities such as Chennai, Puducherry, Viluppuram, and Nagapattinam.

Integrating with major National and State Highways, the project promises seamless connectivity to vital economic and logistical hubs across Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, it will enhance multi-modal integration, linking key railway stations, airports, and a minor port to aid in the swift transportation of goods and passengers. The expansion will be instrumental in fostering regional economic growth while providing substantial employment.
