Justice Surya Kant assumed office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, pledging nearly 15 months at the helm of the country's judiciary. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other high-profile personnel.
Distinguished guests included Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Justice Kant replaces Justice BR Gavai, who retired recently, and will continue in his role until February 9, 2027, marking his 65th birthday.
The swearing-in ceremony embraced traditional customs as Justice Kant paid his respects to elder family members after taking the oath. International dignity was highlighted by judicial delegates from diverse nations such as Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Justice Kant's tenure is expected to be defined by his experience on significant cases, including those on Article 370 and electoral reforms.
