The Tamil Nadu government has announced an extension for farmers to register in the Farmer Registry and enroll in the Prime Minister's Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme until December 1, according to Agriculture Minister M R K Panneerselvam.
Initially set for November 15, the deadline had been pushed to November 30 due to continuous rains and demands from farmers. Currently, the Union government has made it mandatory for farmers to obtain a Farmer Identification Number to insure Samba paddy crops. Over 31.33 lakh acres of Samba paddy have been cultivated, with 7.95 lakh farmers insuring 19.06 lakh acres.
Panneerselvam highlighted that Rs 794 crore has been allocated to Tamil Nadu under the crop insurance scheme, with Rs 697 crore already distributed to four lakh farmers. The remaining Rs 67 crore will be provided once the Centre's share is received.
