A significant uproar has erupted in the Bhatakufar area of Shimla, where residents allege that ongoing construction work by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for land subsidence and infrastructure damage. An administrative inspection was conducted following reports of a road collapse on November 22, prompting immediate halts in construction activities.
Additional District Magistrate Jyoti Rana, overseeing the evaluation, stated that the district administration has enlisted geologists and technical experts to investigate the site's issues. "After the November 22 incident, we paused certain activities and assembled a team of specialists to determine if the tunnelling project was the cause," stated Rana.
Locals, including Councillor Narinder Thakur, have accused NHAI of defective construction practices, citing growing safety concerns for residents living above the tunnel. They claim persistent tunnelling has destabilized the terrain, leading to structural damages and a dangerous living environment. Thakur emphasized the need for responsible development and urged for restoration and strict oversight of ongoing construction efforts.
