Hungary Secures TurkStream Operations Amid Sanctions
Hungary will face no disruptions in operating the TurkStream gas pipeline following a new agreement with the U.S., as announced by its Foreign Minister. Despite criticism, Hungary continues its reliance on Russian energy amidst ongoing tensions and sanctions. Financial transactions related to TurkStream are exempt from U.S. sanctions for another year.
Hungary has secured uninterrupted operations for its TurkStream gas pipeline after an agreement with the United States, confirmed by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. This decision follows the company's relocation from the Netherlands to Hungary.
Despite facing criticism from European Union and NATO allies due to its reliance on Russian energy amid the Ukraine conflict, Hungary's deal was facilitated by a meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.
The agreement includes an exemption from U.S. sanctions for a year, ensuring financial operations linked to TurkStream remain unaffected. Hungarian leaders met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure energy supplies for the upcoming winter and the following year.
