Ajay Gupta, apprehended for his role in the devastating Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub fire, which resulted in 25 fatalities, appeared at the Saket district court in New Delhi on Wednesday for remand proceedings. Arrested by Goa Police on Tuesday, Gupta's detention marks a significant development following the Sunday blaze in Arpora, which predominantly cost the lives of the restaurant's staff. The Goa government has established a committee to probe the incident's cause.
A Lookout Circular was previously issued for Gupta after he evaded authorities at his Delhi residence, leading to a non-bailable arrest warrant. Meanwhile, the district administration demolished a portion of the Romeo Lane restaurant in Vagator, co-owned by Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, who also own the ill-fated Birch by Romeo Lane.
In a related breakthrough, INTERPOL issued a 'blue corner notice' for Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, who fled to Thailand following the fire. The international effort exemplifies the expanded investigation to apprehend all responsible individuals. According to Goa Tourism's Rohan Khaunte, the investigation will be thorough, promising accountability and necessary actions against those involved. Goa Police's statement highlights the issuance of international notices to ensure culprits are brought to justice.
