The Maharashtra State Onion Growers' Association has announced a groundbreaking initiative with the establishment of a National Onion Centre in Nashik district's Jaigaon village. The center is intended to provide farmers with greater control over the production, pricing, and trade of onions, which are a crucial kitchen staple.

The proposed centre seeks to transform the region's existing multi-layered supply chain. By introducing direct marketing from farmers to consumers both domestically and internationally, the association aims to ensure fair remuneration for farmers and affordable prices for consumers.

Project leader Bharat Dighole emphasized that this center will give farmers a strong voice in decisions ranging from exports to price controls, historically made without their input. Efforts will also encompass seed research, quality control, and transparent trade transactions across APMCs.
