Shipping Titans Chart Return to Suez Canal amid Geopolitical Shifts
Major shipping companies are planning a return to the Suez Canal after disruptions due to Red Sea security risks. A ceasefire and broader shifts in global politics prompted some to resume operations, though uncertainties persist. Various shipping giants, including Maersk and CMA CGM, plan strategic routes adjustments.
After more than two years of disruptions, major shipping companies are strategizing a return to the Suez Canal amid lingering security concerns in the Red Sea.
The return, prompted by a ceasefire agreement reached in October 2025, marks a significant shift following the rerouting of vessels since late 2023 due to attacks by Yemen's Houthi forces. This geopolitical tension, in solidarity with Palestinians, heightened risks for commercial shipping.
Denmark-based Maersk announced its plans to begin limited sailings through the Suez Canal this month. Meanwhile, companies like CMA CGM are re-routing some services due to persistent global uncertainties, and others, such as Wallenius Wilhelmsen, are taking a cautious approach.
