Geneva Peace Talks: High Stakes for Ukraine and Russia
Negotiators from Ukraine and Russia convened in Geneva for U.S.-facilitated peace talks focused on land disputes. With President Trump urging quick resolution, heavy airstrikes by Russia in Ukraine preceded the talks. Despite low expectations, delegates aim to address territorial control and other critical issues.
Delegations from Ukraine and Russia gathered in Geneva on Tuesday for two days of U.S.-mediated peace talks, with a focus on crucial land disputes. U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Kyiv to act swiftly to reach a peace deal, amid Europe's largest conflict since 1945.
In advance of the discussions, Russia launched extensive airstrikes across Ukraine, severely damaging the power network in Odesa and leaving tens of thousands without heat and water. President Zelenskiy has called for stronger pressure on Russia from Kyiv's allies, demanding a 'real and just' peace agreement through harsher sanctions and increased arms supplies.
The Geneva talks come as Russian delegates are led by Vladimir Medinsky. Despite a history of confrontational negotiations, both sides strive for substantive dialogue. As tensions persist, Ukraine remains steadfast in achieving 'a sustainable and lasting peace.'
