US Greenlights India's Russian Oil Purchases Amid Global Supply Concerns
The United States has permitted India to purchase Russian oil already floating on waterways to ease global supply amid ongoing Middle East tensions. The temporary waiver aims to keep oil prices stable, without providing financial benefit to Russia. This stop-gap measure reaffirms India's essential partnership with the US.
In a strategic move aimed at stabilizing global oil supply, the United States has granted India permission to buy Russian oil currently on ships at sea. This decision comes as tensions in the Middle East threaten supply chains, prompting the Treasury to allow this temporary measure.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the waiver for India was necessary to address short-term supply gaps without financially benefiting Russia. The authorization pertains only to oil already in transit, easing global market pressures and reinforcing US-India relations.
The action, described as a short-term and practical solution, enables India to import oil stranded at sea, refining and integrating it into the global market swiftly. This maneuver underscores both countries' commitment to maintaining stabilized oil prices in an increasingly volatile geopolitical climate.
