Helsinki's Nuclear Leap: Helen's Multibillion-Euro SMR Investment
Helen, Helsinki's energy utility, plans a significant investment of 1-5 billion euros in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to meet rising power demands and reduce emissions. SMRs, offering a power capacity of up to 300 megawatts, provide a stable power source amidst fluctuating wind energy prices.
Helen, the energy utility in Helsinki, is gearing up for a substantial investment in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, announcing plans to spend between 1 and 5 billion euros. Its newly-formed nuclear branch sees SMRs as a solution to rising energy needs and emission reduction.
SMRs, which generate up to 300 megawatts and are compact enough for factory assembly and transport, align well with Finland's needs. As wind power contributes to low but volatile prices, Helen eyes nuclear power to ensure stable electricity supply, following the shutdown of its last coal plant.
CEO Pekka Tolonen highlighted nuclear as the brightest path to a combustion-free future. By 2027, Helen expects to finalize a site for their SMR project, poised to double power use in Helsinki amid data center expansions and clean technology adoption.
