In a significant announcement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that universal health insurance coverage is a primary goal for 2033. During her address in the Rajya Sabha, she highlighted that the insurance sector expanded to cover 58 crore lives in 2024-25.
The minister outlined targeted reforms, including raising FDI in the insurance sector and deploying GST exemptions on premiums, all aimed at bridging the coverage gap. The public, private, and standalone insurers collectively played vital roles, contributing Rs 1,17,505 crore to the sector.
Significant emphasis was placed on protecting vulnerable communities through schemes such as the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, which insures the most needy at minimal cost. Sitharaman assured stringent regulatory measures, citing recent penalties imposed on insurers for violations, including unfair business practices.
