The Swedish Coast Guard announced a significant move on Friday, apprehending an oil tanker, Flora 1, in the Baltic Sea. Suspected to be part of Russia's shadow fleet, the vessel is believed to have caused a 12-kilometer oil spill off the island of Gotland.

This latest seizure forms part of Sweden's intensified measures against Russian-connected vessels. The Flora 1 embarked from the Russian port of Primorsk with no clear destination, according to MarineTraffic data. The Swedish Coast Guard assured that the oil is not poised to reach the shore.

An investigation into possible environmental crime is underway, as the vessel reportedly appears on the EU sanctions list despite its unclear flag status. Swedish Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin highlighted on social media the broader threats posed by Russia's shadow fleet, calling for heightened security and environmental precautions.
