Inferno Ignites Concerns at Australia's Geelong Refinery

A major fire erupted at Viva Energy Group's Geelong refinery in southern Australia, sparking worries amid recent fuel security issues. The blaze, reported late Wednesday, remains uncontrolled, but all staff are safe. The refinery processes significant quantities of oil, bolstering concerns over fuel supply as geopolitical tensions rise.

Firefighters have mobilized to tackle a significant fire at Viva Energy Group's Geelong refinery located in southern Australia. Local fire authorities reported the blaze at approximately 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Although the damage's full extent remains unclear, all personnel have been safely accounted for, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

The incident at the Corio refinery in Victoria was triggered by several calls reporting explosions and visible flames. This facility is critical to Australia's energy infrastructure, with a daily processing capacity of 120,000 barrels of oil, as per company figures.

Viva Energy Group's Geelong site is one of only two refineries left in the country, employing over 1,100 staff and supplying more than half of Victoria's fuel. The fire highlights Australia's growing fuel security woes, exacerbated by geopolitical conflicts involving Iran. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announced measures to reduce fuel and diesel excises to mitigate economic impacts.
