Harivansh Poised for Unopposed Return as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman

Harivansh, previously Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, is on the brink of re-election to the role. With no opposition notice by the deadline, the election is expected to be unanimous, facilitated by Leader of the House JP Nadda's motion and Chairman SP Radhakrishnan's declaration.

Harivansh, re-nominated to the Rajya Sabha, is once again set to assume the role of Deputy Chairman following his term expiration earlier this month. Sources indicate a re-election as Deputy Chairman is imminent, with no opposition notice received by the April 26 deadline.

Election consensus appears likely as JP Nadda, Leader of the House, initiated the motion, seconded by BJP's S Phangnon Konyak. A voice vote in the Rajya Sabha is expected to affirm the motion.

Chairman SP Radhakrishnan will formally announce Harivansh's appointment, and he will ceremoniously be led to the Chair by members from both treasury benches and opposition, honoring tradition.

Having filed his nomination on Thursday, Harivansh's election is anticipated on Friday under the established parliamentary rules. Proceedings will begin at 11 am, following the official laying of papers in the House.

Harivansh's term as a JD-U member concluded on April 9; however, he was re-nominated by President Droupadi Murmu, continuing his service since 2018.
