The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to two ambitious railway projects valued at approximately Rs. 24,815 crores. The projects, involving the Ghaziabad - Sitapur and Rajahmundry (Nidadavolu) - Visakhapatnam (Duvvada) third and fourth lines, aim to significantly increase the line capacity and track network of Indian Railways.
According to an official release, these infrastructural enhancements will not only alleviate congestion and streamline operations but also align with Prime Minister Modi's visionary ‘New India’ plan. The initiative promises to foster comprehensive development across the regions by expanding employment opportunities and making the populace more 'Atmanirbhar' (self-reliant). Further, these projects fall under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrating multi-modal connectivity and boosting logistic efficiency through strategic stakeholder consultations.
The railway endeavors will extend the network by approximately 601 kilometers, enhancing connectivity to prominent tourist and religious sites. They also play a critical role in transporting vital commodities such as coal and food grains. With the Indian Railways’ eco-friendly operations, the emissions savings are equivalent to the plantation of over nine crore trees, underscoring their positive environmental impact. Additionally, the projects promise substantial annual logistics cost savings over road transportation, addressing both economic and environmental imperatives.
