In a remarkable medical achievement, the Department of Plastic, Cosmetic, and Hand Microsurgery at a private hospital has completed its second successful bilateral hand transplant. The recipient, a young mother of two who lost both hands in a catastrophic chaff-cutting accident, underwent a transformative 12-hour surgical procedure.

The intricate operation saw the transplantation of both donor upper limbs – the right at the supracondylar level and the left at the distal forearm. Surgeons meticulously repaired bones, tendons, arteries, veins, and nerves under high magnification. Dr. Mahesh Mangal, reflecting on this medical milestone, stated, "This achievement is a testament to the expertise and dedication within our department."

Highlighting the complex nature of the procedure, Dr. Anubhav Gupta remarked on the mission's ultimate goal: not just anatomical restoration, but the patient's return to dignity and autonomy. Dr. Bheem Nanda emphasized the importance of maintaining tissue viability and ensuring stable skeletal fixation amid prolonged ischemia, which are critical for the success of such transplants.

The surgical team underscored the role of comprehensive postoperative care, including immunosuppression, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy, in determining long-term outcomes. The hospital expressed deep gratitude to the donor and their family for their profound act of generosity, which has granted the recipient renewed hope and a second chance at life.
