Himachal Pradesh's Green Energy Revolution: Small Hydropower and Solar Expansion

The Himachal Pradesh government is aggressively pursuing small hydropower and solar energy projects to meet over 90% of its energy needs from renewable sources. With several projects underway and solar parks planned, the state aims to become a green energy leader under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's leadership.

The Himachal Pradesh government is making significant strides in the realm of renewable energy, specifically by expanding small hydropower projects. According to a state spokesperson, several initiatives have been launched recently, focusing on projects of up to 5 MW capacity.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has expressed an ambitious goal to meet more than 90% of the state's energy demand, estimated to be around 13,000 million units annually, from renewable sources. In the last three years, multiple small hydropower projects have been initiated, completed, or are awaiting approval.

Furthering its green energy ambitions, the state also plans to develop solar energy projects, including setting up five solar parks with a combined capacity of 501 MW. A notable addition is a planned 200 MW solar power plant in Kangra district. These efforts aim to position Himachal Pradesh as a leader in green energy.
