Coal India Ltd (CIL), the country's largest coal producer, announced a significant 9.7% decline in coal production for April, dropping to 56.1 million tonnes. This downturn raises concerns as the nation grapples with surging energy demands driven by peak summer conditions.

The reduction in coal output is particularly alarming as coal remains a critical component of India's power generation, accounting for over 70% of electricity production. Industry experts warn of potential strains on supplies to thermal plants and industries, possibly leading to costlier coal imports.

Despite CIL's subsidiaries like Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd experiencing a production decrease, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Central Coalfields Ltd showed positive growth. The company, which accounts for 80% of domestic coal production, has not stated reasons for the production drop. Amid intensifying heatwave conditions, India's peak power demand hit record levels, exacerbating concerns about the country's energy sufficiency.
