Diplomatic Tensions Rise as Bangladesh Protests Indian Airport Interrogation
Bangladesh has summoned an Indian diplomat to protest the detainment and questioning of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's adviser at New Delhi airport. The incident adds strain to already tense relations between the two countries, with disputes over border security and migrant repatriation procedures exacerbating the situation.
Bangladesh has taken the bold step of summoning a top Indian diplomat stationed in Dhaka. This action is in response to what Dhaka views as an unfair treatment of an adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The adviser, Zahed Ur Rahman, was reportedly detained and interrogated for hours at New Delhi airport, sparking tensions between the adjacent nations.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman labeled the event as 'unexpected and unfortunate'. Bangladesh formally communicated its concern to Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe as relations between the two neighbors continue to face turbulence. The country's grievances are heightened by previous issues, including India's alleged attempts to repatriate undocumented migrants unlawfully.
The incident adds complexity to a sensitive period in Bangladesh-India relations, further strained since the 2024 uprising against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Amid talks of border security, both nations agreed to enhance intelligence-sharing and coordination, yet the migrant issue persists as a thorn in diplomatic ties.
