Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to uphold its integrity and professionalism, drawing a parallel to William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar by stating, "No one should be able to raise any suspicion about the behaviour of Caesar's wife." He pointed out that the impeachment issue against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar remains unresolved and is still under consideration.
Tharoor emphasized the importance of trust in the Election Commission, whose integrity is vital for the democratic process. He remarked that although the impeachment motion was rejected by the presiding officers, it is still being reviewed further up the chain. Meanwhile, as vote counting continues in the Legislative Assembly elections for four Indian states and Puducherry, Tharoor also addressed the political scenario in West Bengal.
With the BJP leading in West Bengal, Tharoor discussed the potential strategic adjustments for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following their electoral defeat. He highlighted the importance of TMC's role on the national stage and the potential for a stronger INDIA coalition, especially in light of their previous collaboration against controversial government bills.
