UDF Secures Landslide Victory in Kerala Assembly Elections, Ousts LDF

The United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a significant win in the Kerala Assembly elections, surpassing the majority threshold with ease. This outcome reflects a clear rejection of the decade-long Left Democratic Front (LDF) regime and marks a notable resurgence for the Congress-led alliance, capturing 63 out of 140 seats.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) clinched a sweeping victory in the Kerala Assembly elections on Monday by exceeding the requisite majority of 71 seats in the 140-seat assembly. This result is widely interpreted as a definitive dismissal of the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) ten-year governance, heralding a resurgence for the Congress-led coalition.

Despite expectations of anti-incumbency against the LDF, the extent of the UDF’s electoral gain has captured widespread attention. In the previous 2016 elections, the LDF, spearheaded by Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had secured a firm win with 91 seats. This included 58 wins by the CPI(M) and 19 by the Communist Party of India. Conversely, the UDF, with a Congress leadership, won only 47 seats.

In 2021, the LDF further solidified its position, achieving 99 seats and marking an unprecedented consecutive term for Vijayan. Meanwhile, the UDF decline continued, garnering just 41 seats. The fresh election outcome is not only a UDF triumph but hints at a generational shift in Kerala politics, with the party advancing sans longstanding leaders such as K Karunakaran and Oommen Chandy. Emerging leaders like V D Satheesan now spearhead the fight against LDF policies.
