In a scathing critique, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Delhi unit chief, Saurabh Bharadwaj, lambasted the BJP-led administration for its handling of the devastating Vivek Vihar fire tragedy. The deadly blaze resulted in the loss of nine lives, including a one-and-a-half-year-old child, prompting a call for accountability. Bharadwaj accused the government of shifting blame onto the victims rather than addressing glaring administrative failings.
According to Bharadwaj, attempts were made to construct a narrative attributing fault to the victims, alleging that so-called safety measures like iron grills and automatic doors hindered escape. He challenged this perspective and questioned Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, pointing out that many residential structures in Delhi feature a single staircase, making such arguments baseless.
Bharadwaj raised serious concerns over the emergency response time, claiming a significant delay in the launch of rescue operations. He revealed that the fire services took 20 minutes to arrive and an additional 30 minutes to prepare, which he believes cost lives. Accusing the government of evading responsibility, Bharadwaj urged a thorough inquiry, questioning both the government's competence and its efforts to divert blame away from systemic issues.
