Amid ongoing global energy disruptions, India is mobilizing both government and private sector leaders to champion a national effort in energy conservation. Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the 5th Informal Group of Ministers (IGoM) has crafted a strategy designed to merge military precision with civilian participation, reminiscent of the coordinated response seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IGoM assured that India's energy security remains intact, supported by substantial reserves. According to the Ministry of Defence, the country has rolling stocks boasting 60-day supplies of crude oil and natural gas, alongside 45 days of LPG. Despite international crises, India's foreign exchange reserves stand strong at $703 billion, with its oil sector flourishing as a top global refiner and exporter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon citizens to participate in a collective effort to moderate fuel consumption, a move poised to ease both fiscal and inflationary pressures domestically. The financial toll of imported crude has surged, with Indian Oil Marketing Companies incurring daily losses of ₹1,000 crore. Yet, by adopting fuel-efficient practices, India strengthens its energy autonomy while potentially transforming the current crisis into a catalyst for long-term sustainability and economic independence.
