The Maharashtra government has given the green light to a pilot project aimed at desilting six key irrigation reservoirs, providing nutrient-rich silt to farmers at no charge, while ensuring rigorous oversight, officials reported.
The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in a recent cabinet meeting, seeks to bolster water storage and irrigation efficiency, alongside augmenting soil fertility across agricultural fields.
Set to be enacted at various dams, the project empowers irrigation development bodies to manage operations, allowing farmers to transport the complimentary silt without any royalty, barring logistics costs, according to an official announcement.
