Political Turbulence in Tamil Nadu: AIADMK MLA's Resignation Accepted by Speaker

Tamil Nadu's political landscape faces upheaval as AIADMK MLA Esakki Subaya's resignation is approved by Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar. This action has increased the AIADMK's vacant seats, prompting senior party members to urge revocation, citing anti-defection laws as a major concern amidst intra-party divisions.

In a significant development affecting Tamil Nadu's political equation, Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Ambasamudram AIADMK MLA Esakki Subaya, insiders revealed. Initially, Prabhakar had turned down Subaya's resignation, demanding a handwritten form instead.

The acceptance of Subaya's resignation marks a total of four such departures from the AIADMK faction, leading to a reduced tally of 43 MLAs in the state assembly. Notably, 27 legislators are aligned with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, while 16 support senior leaders SP Velumani and CV Shanmugam, according to party insiders.

The total vacancies in the Assembly now stand at five, including the Tiruchirappalli seat where actor-politician Vijay contested. Speaker Prabhakar stated he was reviewing Subaya's letter according to legislative protocols.

AIADMK MLA Isakki Subbiah's letter has been received, and a thorough review will precede a formal announcement regarding its acceptance, Prabhakar informed the press. He confirmed adherence to assembly rules in this matter. As the AIADMK grapples with internal strife following Monday's resignations from three other MLAs, efforts to join Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam have further fueled tensions.

On Tuesday, several senior party figures, including Agri SS Krishnamoorthy and OS Manian, approached Speaker Prabhakar, insisting on the rejection of the said resignations. The trio's names, Maragatham Kumaravel, Sathyabama, and Jayakumar, were highlighted in a petition seeking legal clarity.

Post-discussions, AIADMK leader IS Inbadurai articulated the party's stance: the resignations contravene the anti-defection law and should not be sanctioned. "The Speaker's refusal to accept resignations is imperative," emphasized Inbadurai.

Another MLA, Thalavai N. Sundaram, echoed the call for meticulous scrutiny of the resignations. Sundaram warned of potential legal action should the Speaker fail to heed their concerns, suggesting court intervention if necessary.

Concurrently, the three legislators defected to the Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna's TVK party, with the Speaker later confirming their resignation on Monday. (ANI)
