Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited a relief camp in Makhan village on Thursday to meet internally displaced persons and evaluate ongoing relief efforts. This visit comes on the heels of heightened regional instability, leading to widespread displacement in areas like Makhan, Kanto Sabal, Imphal, and Kanglatongbi.
The Chief Minister, joined by Deputy Chief Minister L Dikho and several MLAs, including Awangbou Newmai and Leishiyo Keishing, emphasized the government's commitment to the safe resettlement of displaced individuals. Security forces, he noted, continue rigorous operations despite logistical hurdles posed by the challenging terrain.
Displaced residents aired their concerns during the visit, with local Simon Sawang reporting assurances from the CM on addressing abduction cases linked to the unrest. Sawang expressed the community’s demand for urgent justice, highlighting their resolve to ensure accountability.
The region has recently faced numerous security challenges, including the May 13 abduction of 18 civilians from Leilon Veiphei, which prompted public protests in Imphal. Peace was partially restored following the release of 28 hostages two days later, facilitated by local organizations and law enforcement.
As efforts continue toward restoring normalcy, the Manipur government remains focused on balancing active security operations with meeting the pressing humanitarian needs of affected families.
