Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar Takes Helm as Vice Chief of Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, a distinguished officer with an illustrious naval career, officially assumed the role of the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on Friday. His appointment follows the tenure of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan. As one of his first official acts, Kochhar honored the country's fallen heroes by laying a floral wreath at New Delhi's National War Memorial, a solemn tribute shared with the outgoing Vice Chief.

Kochhar's service to the Indian Navy began with his commissioning from Pune's National Defence Academy in 1988. His expertise in Gunnery and Missile Systems has underpinned a career marked by significant command and staff roles. His leadership has steered multiple Indian Navy ships, including the renowned aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, through a successful air wing integration and operationalization. His tenure has not only seen command at sea but also strategic inputs at Naval Headquarters.

Over the years, Kochhar has risen through ranks, holding pivotal posts such as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and leading the Western Fleet during key operational periods. His accolades include the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, recognizing his exceptional service and leadership. In his preceding role as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, he played a crucial role in enhancing inter-service coordination. His new position comes amidst complex security dynamics in the maritime domain.
