In a significant political development, West Bengal's cabinet has seen a major expansion with 35 new ministers taking the oath of office on Monday, under Governor RN Ravi's supervision at Kolkata's Lok Bhawan.
The swearing-in brings the total number of ministers to 41, under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, with this reshuffle marking an important step in strengthening state governance and administrative capabilities across various departments.
This revamp follows the BJP's triumph in 208 of 294 assembly seats, paving the way for their first government in the state, succeeding the All India Trinamool Congress after 15 years.
Among the newly appointed ministers are MLAs like Dipak Barman, Arjun Singh, and others, who will handle growing portfolios amid the reshuffle's aim to reflect a balance of experienced figures, socially representative individuals, and professionally accomplished leaders.
The cabinet's composition underscores representation from 13 distinct caste groups, 83% graduate or higher degree holders, and regional representation across the party's five zones. It includes professionals from medicine, academia, journalism, and beyond.
Prominent figures such as BJP legislators Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul are included, bolstering the cabinet with leaders possessing extensive legislative and administrative expertise, alongside leaders like Nishith Pramanick, who served previously as a Union Minister.
This diverse cabinet not only addresses the state's varied demographic landscape but ensures a strategic blend of youth and experience, with the youngest cabinet member being aged 45.
