The Supreme Court of India witnessed a significant reinforcement as five new judges took their oaths on Tuesday, bringing the total strength to 37. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant administered the ceremony, welcoming Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and senior advocate V Mohana to the esteemed bench.
This move marks a positive step towards gender diversity within the judiciary, as Mohana's elevation is expected to bolster the underrepresented female demographic in the Supreme Court. It is noteworthy that since August 2021, Justice BV Nagarathna has been the sole woman on the bench.
After careful deliberation, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed these appointments in May, receiving final approval from the Centre on June 1, as confirmed by Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal. The appointments occur amid the court's sanctioned strength increase to 38, anticipating further vacancies with upcoming retirements.
