Haryana to Launch Smart Metering Initiative by August 31

Haryana is set to initiate smart metering efforts from August 31, as disclosed in a recent review meeting led by Union Minister Manohar Lal. The meeting emphasized a phased rollout beginning with government users. Plans for improved financial viability of utilities and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana were also discussed.

In a decisive step towards modernizing its power infrastructure, Haryana has announced the launch of smart metering works starting August 31. The initiative was confirmed during a review meeting chaired by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, scrutinizing the state's progress in the power sector. The Minister urged Haryana to accelerate the allocation of related projects.

The phased implementation plan for prepaid smart meters will initially target government consumers, followed by households with high electricity demands. Incentives for voluntary conversion were also discussed. Manohar Lal emphasized the necessity of operating power utilities on sound economic principles, reducing costs, and enhancing revenue to ensure financial health.

Addressing Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) loss improvements and operational efficiency remained high on the agenda. The meeting also considered resource adequacy and transmission planning, urging the state to address pending issues promptly. Progress on the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and RDSS was evaluated, with directions to increase consumer participation and improve the power sector's self-sufficiency.
