In a significant advancement for India's defense strategy, the fourth squadron of the S-400 Sudarshan air defense system from Russia has recently landed on Indian shores. This addition marks a further strengthening of the nation's long-range air defense capabilities, intended for prompt deployment in operational areas, according to defense sources.
The S-400 Sudarshan acquisition is part of a 2018 agreement to purchase five squadrons. While three arrived previously, the remaining two were delayed due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This cutting-edge system was pivotal during Operation Sindoor, notably downing a high-value Pakistani aircraft at an unprecedented range.
Anticipation builds for the arrival of the fifth S-400 squadron in upcoming months. Additionally, India's Defense Acquisition Council has endorsed the purchase of five more squadrons. Meanwhile, Project Kusha, an initiative to develop indigenous air defense systems, progresses with key industry partner Solar Industries.
