In an unprecedented move, the Gujarat State Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has approved the creation of a 'Service Commissionerate' dedicated to boosting the service sector. The announcement was made by Government Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani, who highlighted it as the country's first initiative of its kind.
The initiative includes the establishment of a 'Service Commissioner' position to oversee sector development, similar to the role played by the Industries Commissionerate in industrial growth. This innovative approach aims to set an example for other Indian states by creating an institutional framework for the service sector's prosperity.
While Gujarat has historically been a giant in manufacturing, recent years have seen a shift in focus towards strengthening the service sector to achieve a more diversified economy. As part of the 'GRIT' initiative's recommendations, the Commissionerate aims to facilitate rapid service industry development, backed by a Rs 100 crore fund for 2026-27.
Minister Vaghani emphasized that the new Commissionerate will be instrumental in promoting key service sectors like IT, tourism, and logistics. The initiative is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities and significantly contribute to the state's economic growth, positioning Gujarat as a frontrunner in India's service sector landscape.
