In a disturbing revelation, two doctors have been booked for breaking the law by allegedly performing illegal abortions at Lavangare Maternity and Infertility Hospital located in Ketgaon, Pune district.
According to Inspector Narayan Deshmukh of Yavat Police Station, investigations into sex determination and abortion malpractice in Daund Taluka are ongoing. This incident adds to the growing list of illegal abortion activities exposed at the same hospital.
Police reports indicate the illegal operations were discovered during a surprise inspection on June 6. Identified as Swati Lavangare and Tukaram Yashwant Mote, the accused doctors face charges, following a detailed probe revealing that Lavangare, unlicensed as a gynecologist, allegedly conducted illegal abortions using pills in Mote's name.
The scandal traces back to a complaint by Medical Superintendent Sachin Vitthal Gujar. Yavat Police registered an offence under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, escalating concerns about medical malpractice in Maharashtra.
Earlier investigations exposed a sex determination racket, with bogus doctor Annasaheb Giri implicated in illegal fetal sex determination linked to this clinic. Both Mote and Lavangare have now been charged, with Mote recently arrested, while two other implicated doctors remain at large.
The illegal abortion and sex determination case continue to evolve, exposing a significant threat to lawful medical practice in the region. This latest case now falls under the scrutiny of the Economic Offences Wing for further action.
