In a mounting challenge to the governance of one of India's most influential charitable institutions, Former Tata Trusts trustee Mehli Mistry has filed a fresh objection with the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner against the functioning of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT). This move escalates his ongoing challenge to the governance practices among the Tata Trusts, which collectively own around 66% of Tata Sons.
Filed on June 5th, the objection follows Mistry's earlier allegations questioning the trusteeship of key figures in other Tata charitable branches. In this new plea, Mistry accuses trustees, including Noel Tata, of financial impropriety and conflicts of interest, calling for their removal. He also seeks the appointment of an independent Administrator to reinforce governance norms, refraining from any attempts to regain a trustee position.
Mistry's allegations extend to involve financial dealings linked to Tata subsidiaries, questioning decisions influenced by trustees like Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan, claiming breaches of fiduciary duties. The case alleges misappropriation of funds meant for philanthropic purposes and urges a thorough review by the Charity Commissioner to uphold lawful management of the Trust.
