Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has strongly urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to rethink the proposed greenfield airport at Great Nicobar Island, citing significant ecological and social repercussions. Ramesh, Congress General Secretary (In-charge of Communication), expressed his concerns over the environmental and social impact of the project.

In a detailed letter, Ramesh referenced his previous communication from May 16, 2026, suggesting an alternative—expanding the existing runway at INS Baaz on Campbell Bay—to minimize ecological impacts while achieving strategic goals. Citing media reports, Ramesh questioned the Defence Ministry's ecological concerns limiting runway expansion.

Ramesh highlighted ecological threats, including deforestation, intrusion into protected and tribal lands, and ecological displacement. The government's proposal aims to boost proximity to key shipping routes and reduce dependence on foreign ports, including developing a substantial container terminal and an international airport. Yet, Ramesh criticised the assessment processes and urged reconsideration of strategic alternatives.
