In a pivotal advancement for indigenous craft preservation and cultural identity, India's Geographical Indications Registry has awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status to four of Assam's distinctive cultural and artisanal items. This landmark recognition includes Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts, and Deuri Handloom Products, showcasing the state's rich tribal legacy, musicology, and craftsmanship.
Supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), this achievement emphasizes both heritage preservation and economic sustainability for artisans. NABARD has been instrumental in facilitating the GI certification process, bolstering the market potential of Assam's unique offerings both nationally and internationally.
Loken Das, Chief General Manager of NABARD Assam, highlighted the certifications' role in strengthening product identity and authenticity. This brings NABARD's total to 12 GI-certified products, marking a milestone in promoting heritage-based rural livelihoods. These products, deeply woven into the socio-economic tapestry of rural communities, represent traditional knowledge and craftsmanship passed through generations.
The legal certification provides intellectual property protection, enhances market placement, and expands global visibility, benefiting countless rural weavers and artisans. Post-GI certification, NABARD Assam envisions a market-led, holistic approach to promoting GI products, aiming to convert recognition into sustainable livelihood opportunities while preserving Assam's cultural heritage.
