On Monday, Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan inaugurated the Priyadarshini scheme, a new initiative providing women and transgender individuals in the state with free bus travel on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. Satheesan emphasized that this service is a move towards empowering women, allowing them to travel with dignity.
Marking the first phase of a broader government plan, the scheme is part of the Indira Guarantee, aimed at reducing travel-related inequalities. Recalling historical moments, Satheesan noted the launch 110 years ago of public transport in Kerala. The scheme is anticipated to have substantial social and economic benefits.
The government commits approximately ₹800 crore annually to support this initiative. While private bus operators have expressed concerns, the government acknowledges their vital role and intends to work collaboratively for an inclusive transport system. The Priyadarshini scheme's implementation, coinciding with a milestone Cabinet meeting led by Satheesan, also symbolizes societal respect towards women.
