In a crucial stride towards ensuring sustainable water management and bolstering drinking water security in Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the revamped T-Trench Water Body at Spang-Jung in Gompa village, Leh. This rejuvenated spring-fed water source is set to benefit approximately 2,000 people by providing enhanced water availability and better groundwater recharge.

The restoration project has notably elevated the discharge capacity from 300,000 litres per day to 500,000 litres daily, significantly expanding the area's drinking water supply. Established in the 1980s, the T-Trench served as the sole water source for Leh city. However, urban sprawl and haphazard development rendered it ineffective, until LG Saxena initiated its revival as a priority project from March 13.

Conservation efforts included the use of eco-friendly gabion stone masonry to protect traditional water sources, facilitating groundwater replenishment. Additionally, accumulated silt was cleared, enhancing natural flow, and modern filtration systems were installed to guarantee clean water. The site has been transformed into a pleasant public space, blending functionality with aesthetics.

During the inauguration, LG Saxena highlighted the initiative as a testament to Ladakh's long-standing tradition of water preservation. He acknowledged the region's vulnerability to climate change impacts like decreased snowfall and depleting glaciers. Saxena emphasized adopting sustainable practices for water management, resonating with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for water conservation under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

The T-Trench project aims to preserve, rejuvenate, and enhance drinking water sources, promoting groundwater recharge and water quality. It also aspires to become an educational and recreational hub. LG Saxena urged Ladakhis to engage actively in maintaining the revitalized water body, stressing that water conservation should become a widespread social movement.
